Buying Art

We work with clients in different ways according to their knowledge, taste and budget. For all clients we use our global network to source art, then we provide market reports, make recommendations based on our knowledge of the market and our client’s taste and help negotiate purchases.

We sourced this fine example in the UK for a client in Calfornia. We then checked on condition, researched value and negotiated the purchase and delivery to his home.

Selling Art

A French client inherited this wonderful Gericault and wanted a private sale which we managed within two months. We helped establish this was the original version and that the one in the Louvre in Paris was a replica. We helped sell the painting to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We sold this rare large print by Lee Ufan to a collector in South Korea, acting on behalf of a prominent Asian art collector. We conducted in-depth market research and analysis before securing a successful placement.

Auction
Services

We can access, explain and navigate the world of art auctions for you. Auctions can sometimes be daunting – the number of works on view, the conflicting estimates, the lack of guarantees, the terminology and of course the bidding. Fine Art Brokers can help you find, research and bid with confidence in auctions.

We advised a private client on the purchase of this piece in London in 2000 and, after bidding successfully, arranged the delivery to New York. After our client’s passing in 2013, we helped broker the painting on behalf of the estate. Since 2000, the value has increased fourfold.

Collection Management

We provide strategic services for planning, curating and budgeting when building and owning a collection. We also offer guidance on insurance and logistics and are pro-active in suggesting favorable times to deaccession.

Estates & Fiduciaries

We work closely with trusts, estates and fiduciaries to arrange valuations, discuss and orchestrate private sales and negotiate with auction houses. It is important to have an in-depth understanding of the market and sales process when consigning estates to auction.

Commentary on the May auctions in New York

The results from the May auctions in New York created a mixture of emotions; excitement, surprises, a few disappointments, but overall confirmation that the art market is active and stable. Some artworks exceeded expectations, some of which we describe below, but overall there was a good sell through rate. Most vendors were pleased (or relieved). One of the main headlines of the week was the failure of Alberto Giacometti’s Grande tête mince at a reported reserve of $65 million. This headline grabbing flop was in fact not an example of a failing art market, rather the vendor’s initial reluctance to take a reasonable reserve and a later refusal to accept an irrevocable bid before the sale, which I believe was $55 million. I was involved in guaranteeing two other Giacometti sculptures, and both sold.
